Lake Ray Hubbard Fishing Report

Lake Ray Hubbard Fishing Guide Report

Lake Ray Hubbard has been very good for February and the begging of March. The weather has been fantastic except for a few windy and rainy days. This is why we suffer in August for 60/70 degree temps in the winter . Please remember I offer trips 7 days a week and the weekdays there isn’t a sole on the water.

White Bass Patterns

Lake Ray Hubbard from March thru April there are a lot of changes in that short span. As you get closer to spring when the water starts to warm the shallower they get. Most of my current catching is in water 28-32 ft deep. Most days the fish will suspend a few cranks off of bottom. Its dead sticking time or at least as slow as movement has you can stand for this month. A thumper is vital this time of year as these fish roam the flats. People have their theory has to why it works, I am just a fishing guide not a biologist. All your life you are told to be quiet when fishing then comes along the crazy notion of hitting the bottom of your boat to make sound to draw the fish near. The bite is usually soft and you have to be quick. Right now is basically the start of the Spawn for whiteness, especially with the warmer days. Lots of fish are starting up the creeks, not all go though and you can have very successful days on the main body of the lake. Once April gets here depending on weather and moon phase the shad spawn will start and the white bass will go crazy after they spawn.

White Bass Lures

I use one set up this time of year until the fish start chasing shad shallow after the shad spawn. I use a light slab with jigs tied above it in 12 inch lengths. If you are drifting with drift socks or the winds are calm enough to drift without them then use a heaver slab to keep your bait as vertical as you can get it. Color doesn’t really matter on the lures but some days they hit one a little more. I will have multiple colors tied on for the jigs. If you are going after big fish like hybrids or striper than a heavy Jig head with a 3 or 4 inch fluke is your best bet. Once the fish move shallow , I throw the smallest bait possible during the spawn on warm days. When mid April gets here I throw 3 inch swim baits or tail spinners especially when they are chasing bait Shallow.

Lake Ray Hubbard Fishing Guide Report

Lake Ray Hubbard July fishing can be hot, not only the temps but the catching. Although this has been one of the milder summers in some years. The water level is at full pool and that’s a good thing. I have to admit, for the first time in a long time I took a little time off at the end of June and first of July. I had an opportunity to fish in Florida for a few days with a good friend of mine for tarpon. Although we didn’t catch any tarpon we caught a verity of salt water fish. It was fun, the weather was beautify and so was the water. When I came back I was only back in Texas for 3 days and headed back to Florida for family vacation. I know , life is tough for a fishing guide. After my return we fished hard and caught lots of fish. July can be a mixed bag of sizes. I always say the smaller fish show up and the larger white bass get harder to find on some days.

White Bass Patterns

Lake Ray Hubbard in July is schooling time for white bass usually. It took a little longer to get going because of the rain and cooler temps. They finally started a couple weeks ago and all you have to do is “the run”. I usually start at the Hilton flats then Robertson Park the jetty flats and red barn cove. I look for some signs of life as far as shad or birds. The thermocline has set in around 16-18 ft and that is the water I focus on after fish have schooled. Always remember if you find fish schooling do to run thru them with you big engine running as this usually spooks the fish down. When the schooling stops I always check the drop offs by the flats as fish will move a little deeper. As the sun gets up, don’t be afraid to look in shallow water up to 9 ft. I can’t explain why they would stay in such shallow water this time of year . I believe it has to do with the thermocline but as I have stated before I am not a biologist. If things get really tough you can always have success trolling this time of year. I will explain that below in the lure section. I am either looking for “clumps” of fish shallow or schools suspended around 16-18 ft right off of humps or points. You can also slow roll mepps when you find clumps of fish really shallow, although this takes practice and very few of my guest can do this technique .

 White Bass Lures

I will have a tiny torpedo tied on if I only have a couple of people on the boat early in the morning or some type of tail spinner when looking for schooling fish. One of my favorite ones is the humdinger tail spinner. Its too dangerous with 3-4 people with all those hooks for top waters. I am still using 3/4 oz slabs with a jig above sometimes . Lure presentation is always key with suspended fish. Drop that slab to the bottom and raise it high slowly as the fish are not usually right on bottom, you can also from a slab and reel slowly up about 5-6 turns. If you notice fish suspended out from humps or points and moving, this is why trolling can flat out put fish in the box. I use the jet diver with release and a pet spoon . I also have counter reels so I know how deep I am running, if you do not have that , then experiment with your set up to figure out the depth by count turns on your reel. If you can practice enough with the mepps it is deadly. Throw it out, let sink (patients) and slow roll it back.

Lake Ray Hubbard White Bass Fishing

First part of June for Lake Ray Hubbard white bass as been pretty steady except for a couple of trips. The weather has been hotter than usual and the fish seem to be on a speed race to a summer pattern already. There are multiple schools of shad fry all over the lake . We have had to pick thru fish for the nice keepers as lots of small white bass and hybrid/stripers are gorging on the small fry. Be sure to take plenty of water on your fishing trips , it gets hot pretty quick on most morning. The hotter temps have brought out the pleasure boaters so be very careful especially later in the mornings and afternoons. The white bass on Lake Ray Hubbard are a little different than most fish on other lakes. All the recreation boats really do not effect them much. I have witnessed many times fish schooling and a ski boat runs through them, only for the fish to reappear 20-30 yards away from the original location. We still have the threat of pop up storms so please be aware of the weather.

White Bass Patterns

White bass have been chasing shad fry all across the lake. The easiest way to locate them is to start driving and keep your eyes open for the splashes of these schools. White egrets or the great blue herons are still showing the way to these schools. If you see one of these magnificent birds hoovering the water below, stop and take a look. The shad do not have a chance with the fish attacking from below and the birds snatching them from above. There has not been any schooling on the flats as of yet, the thermocline has not set in yet. It will not be long before that happens. I continue to keep my eyes open and check these areas early morning. I have not found many white bass on structure such as humps and levees. Do not forget to check the multiple bridges for fish , the shad love the shad and protection of the pillars.

When you find white bass and hybrid/striper chasing these small fry I will have a small in line spinner , tail spinner or top water ties on. I prefer tiny torpedoes in a clear or white for some fun. I will also have a 1 oz slab tied on and fish below the schooling fish. When throwing your slab let it sink all the way to the bottom , turn your handle fast about 5-6 turns and let it fall back through. Many times I am watching my graph and if I notice the fish high, I will tell my guest to just reel up through them. When fishing the structure , we do the same thing with the slab. If you start marking them hugging the bottom, drop the slab , reel up the slack and just "pull" up slowly. A ;lot of times white bass will hit the lure on the pull up.

Lake Ray Hubbard White Bass Fishing

May as not disappointed for white bass fishing on Lake Ray Hubbard. We have had very few storms that are usual in May. The shad spawn is still going and on windy days the fish are going crazy along most windy shorelines. Fishing has been good to great. Please be aware that a lot of small hybrid striped bass have been present. The threat of pop up storms is still great for the month of May and first of June. Always have access to a weather app and watch the weather. I had a trip that they did not call for rain that day, we lasted till 10:30 am and storms blew in. Lake Ray Hubbard can turn into an ocean real quick with high winds.

White Bass Patterns

When white bass are chasing shad , they are normally on shallow flats, coves and shorelines. Keep an eye out for gulls circling and a great clue is to look for the white egrets or the great blue herons sitting on the shorelines stacked up looking for a buffet of shad. If you gaze across the lake and see these big birds hoovering over the water, be sure to ease over to the location ..more than likely fish are blowing shad out of the water. White bass have been doing a little schooling but that should increase as the month of June comes closer.  Use your trolling motor to ease up on your spot , if fishing a shore line , start up wind and let the wind drift you down the bank. On the flats if you pull your boat into deeper water , use the wind to let you drift across it so you can spot small pods of fish blowing shad out of the water. When that action stops, be sure to look in deeper water out from the same areas. Example was I had fish on a flat in 8-12 ft water, they moved out of the area so I eased out to the point in 19-22 ft water, the white bass would come in waves . Using your electronics is very important in this situation. On very tough days with high pressure if you mark fish suspended out from these same areas but not in huge groups, don't be afraid to break out the trolling gear.

White Bass Lures

When you find white bass or hybrid/stripers shallow i like to throw 3 inch Co Ho with a 1/2 oz head. Many people like to also throw rattle traps, small crank baits and even lighter A-rigs. Pay close attention to the size of the shad in the water. You might have to switch over to a small in line spinner or a tail spinner. I personally like to use a 1/2 tail spinner made by Humdinger , you can find these at www.humdingerlures.com . When fishing vertical structure use a 3/4 oz or 1 oz jigging spoon/ slab spoon with a small jig ties about 16 inches above the slab. Here is a good link to show you how to tie the knot www.netknots.com/fishing_knots/drop-shot-rig .

Lake Ray Hubbard White Bass Fishing

Lake Ray Hubbard White Bass Fishing

April showers bring May flowers!!! Well in Texas when talking about white bass fishing it is more like April WINDS bring storms in May. The shad spawn has started , although very late because of the cold weather and water in April. We fought the winds on Lake Ray Hubbard and also cried mercy a few times. Had a lot of rescheduled trips because of weather. May should bring less winds at time but be aware of the storms that will come thru. Please remember that lighting is not to be taken lightly when white bass fishing or any kind of outdoor activity. Fish are feeding and it will only get better as the month move on.

 White Bass Patterns

When white bass and hybrid/striped bass get through with their spawn, they go on a feeding frenzy! You can find them throughout the day on shallow flats , along rip rap, shallow coves with sandy banks and around bridge pillions feeding on shad. When in shallow water , turn your big motor off well away from where you are targeting. Use your trolling motor to ease up on your spot , if fishing a shore line , start up wind and let the wind drift you down the bank. On the flats if you pull your boat into deeper water , use the wind to let you drift across it so you can spot small pods of fish blowing shad out of the water. Use your trolling motor to stay onto of the action. The fish will not stay shallow the whole day but will come back through out the day. When white bass are not in the shallow, check the same areas but deeper. Lake Ray Hubbard has many long points and drop offs. Use your electronics to locate these fish.

Find the windy points , rip rap, flats and cuts in the shore line then chunk and whined to  locate pockets of white bass and hybrid/striper. When the fish move deeper use a small jigging spoon/ slab and don't forget to ties a small jig above for the chance to catch 2 at a time. A little trick I like to use is when I am shallow , I watch my Humminbird 12 Helix on side imaging. You can actually watch fish swim past you and you know what side of the boat to throw. The first pic below demonstrates this technique. The little white dots to the right are fish moving past as a few on the left.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays .Winter time fishing is really picked up the last few weeks and wanted to send out a report . This time of year can be really good and should remain so for the next couple months . Dress warm and it's not so bad :) for those of you that brave the winter fishing with me know that the white bass are huge and the hybrids get bigger :) Fall fishing was sub par because of the water levels but that doesn't seem to effect them in the winter . I am running a Jack Frost Winter time special for all of my guest , the weather it's really not that bad most of the days and the fishing is pretty steady .  If anybody is interested just email or give me all call . I would also like for you to check out my new website www.jvguideservice.com  . Thank you again for giving me the opportunity to be your Lake Ray Hubbard Fishing Guide ...

Lake Ray Hubbard Fishing Report | up and down with the inconstant weather. A summer pattern should evolve once this settles down. Most white bass are being cught with 1 oz slabs raise at a constant rate. We have also started burning the slab up and that should be the regular technique the rest of the summer. I have also been down rigging for hybrids and some days are more succesful then others. I have some open dates so give me a call or email .

Lake Ray Hubbard | Fishing Report

Lake Ray Hubbard Fishing Report - the fishing remains good on our wonderful area lake . The water is warming nicely and is 69-72 degrees. The white bass are holding on structure such as humps , points and levees in 23-29 ft of water later in the morning using 3/4 Peekwi Chieftain Slab Spoon. Early morning schooling is going strong on the flats around Robertson Park , Harbor Flats and the jetty around the power plant and if it stays cloudy they stay active for quite awhile. Best bait that I have used is the McQueen and 4 inch CoCo Moe's with 1/2 oz or 3/4 oz DH jig heads. Hybrid/striped bass are good on some of these same flats and multiple shore lines throwing 4 in sassy shads with a 3/4 oz dead head jig heads. You can get these at www.moestackleshop.com and ask Mike to set you up with the Lake Ray Hubbard package that John Varner uses . Remember when looking on the flats or shallow water to turn off your motors , approach with your trolling motor . The hybrids spook easily and that way you will catch more fish . When you see fish schooling use the same method with the trolling motor . On some of the points and humps you will mark small pimples on the bottom , drop your slab and raise slowly , when you start catching the pimples turn into arches as you get them stirred up .Everybody have a safe weekend cause the holiday brings out the " Can't Fix Stupid Crowd"
